What the September announcement establishes
IREN reported on September 8, 2026 that its 2 GW Sweetwater Hub was conditionally included as Base Load in ERCOT’s Batch Zero process. The classification remains subject to further approvals. This is a dated infrastructure milestone, not a statement that the whole campus is already serving customers. The distinction matters for readers following the movement of large computing operators toward AI infrastructure: a power-related announcement and an operating data center describe different stages. The analysis below explains how to read the capacity language without converting an unfinished project into today’s supply. Keep development stages in separate columns
For an operator’s project register, land, grid status, energized electrical infrastructure, completed buildings and commissioned IT capacity should be separate entries. This is our analytical framework, not a claim that every project follows an identical approval sequence. Progress in one column may enable the next, but does not prove it is finished. A substation can be energized while downstream equipment is still under construction. A completed building can still need equipment installation, testing and customer acceptance. A reader should therefore keep the name of the metric beside the number when comparing companies. Combining development potential and operating capacity into one total makes the comparison less useful. The word conditional also needs to remain attached to the reported status; removing it from a headline changes the meaning of the announcement.
Power and energy answer different questions
The headline unit is power. One gigawatt equals 1,000 megawatts, so 2 GW equals 2,000 MW. Neither number by itself states annual energy use. As a purely illustrative exercise, a constant 1 MW load running for 24 hours would consume 24 MWh. Real consumption depends on when the load operates and how much of the available capacity it uses. This example is not a forecast for Sweetwater. It explains why an infrastructure pipeline cannot be translated directly into purchased electricity, server utilization or Bitcoin hashrate. The same caution applies when comparing an electrical connection with IT load: equipment outside the servers can consume part of the supply. A useful report identifies the measurement boundary and states whether the number describes gross site demand, computing equipment or a future connection limit.
What a smaller mining operator can take from it
The practical lesson is to verify the capacity that a specific contract actually makes available. A proposed hosting agreement should identify the energized allocation, commencement conditions, metering boundary and treatment of interruptions. A connection figure mentioned in a presentation does not itself establish those terms. When assessing a farm expansion, an operator can separate the cost of obtaining power from the cost of using it and from the revenue generated after commissioning. That prevents an inexpensive energy assumption from concealing a long period before any equipment can run. The same method applies when exploring a change from mining to another computing service: the electrical asset is only one component. Cooling performance, connectivity and the service level promised to customers need their own assessment and cannot be inferred from a gigawatt headline.
Evidence to watch in the next update
The next useful evidence would identify changes in approval status, executed connection terms, construction progress and commissioned capacity. Those disclosures should retain their dates so that readers can distinguish a target from an achieved milestone. A delay or revision would need a new company or operator statement, not an assumption based on a stock-price move.
