Choosing an ASIC: algorithm, efficiency and infrastructure
Compare exact configurations, not headline hashrate alone.

Start with the algorithm
An ASIC is specialised hardware. A Bitcoin SHA-256 miner cannot become a Scrypt miner by changing the pool address. First choose the network and algorithm, then filter the catalogue by manufacturer and year. Check the exact suffix and hashrate configuration: Pro, XP, Hyd and similarly named variants may have different power supplies, cooling requirements and operating limits.
Calculate J/TH correctly
For SHA-256 hardware, efficiency in J/TH equals watts divided by TH/s. An illustrative 200 TH/s machine drawing 3,500 W has 17.5 J/TH. A 100 TH/s device at 3,450 W has 34.5 J/TH. Lower is better for electricity consumed per unit of hashing, but it does not automatically mean lower total cost or faster payback.
Compare the same measurement boundary
A chip-level efficiency figure is not the same as a meter reading at the wall. Use the same operating mode and include power-supply losses consistently. For hydro or immersion installations, also budget pumps, dry coolers and other infrastructure that may sit outside the miner specification. A lower miner-only power figure can coexist with a higher site electricity bill.
Check whether the site can support it
Before ordering, verify input voltage, phase, connector type, noise and cooling requirements against the manufacturer's manual. A nominal 3.5 kW load at 230 V corresponds to about 15.2 A at unity power factor; this is only an explanatory calculation, not approval for a particular socket or circuit. Have a qualified electrician assess continuous load, protection, grounding and local requirements.
Inspect a used miner and its economics
Ask for the serial number, exact configuration, repair history and a sustained operating log showing temperatures, boards, fans and pool-side results. A screenshot of a momentary peak is weak evidence. Add delivery, installation, spare parts and expected downtime to the price. Compare several power-price scenarios in the calculator; use the catalogue year to identify a generation, not as proof of condition or warranty.
