Airflow for ASIC racks: keep hot exhaust away from intakes

Plan an air path, inspect recirculation and verify cooling under sustained operation.

Map the complete air path

Draw where fresh air enters, how it reaches each miner and where hot air leaves. Identify doors, walls, filters and nearby equipment that can redirect the flow. A powerful room fan does not guarantee that each miner receives suitable intake air. Avoid placing an exhaust directly against another intake. Keep the manufacturer’s required clearances and ensure the arrangement leaves safe access for maintenance and emergency isolation.

Estimate the heat to remove

Nearly all electrical energy used by the equipment ultimately becomes heat in the surrounding system. A rack consuming 30 kW therefore represents roughly a 30 kW heat load for planning purposes. This does not directly specify a fan size: required airflow depends on temperature rise, air properties, pressure losses and equipment constraints. Have ventilation sized for the actual site rather than copying a fan count from a photograph.

Check restrictions and recirculation

Inspect filters, grilles and ducts for blockage or excessive resistance. Additional ducting or an acoustic enclosure can change the operating conditions of the miner fans. Compare intake temperatures at different rack positions to find hot exhaust returning to the cold side. Use suitable measurement tools without placing loose material near rotating fans. Do not solve an airflow problem by increasing thermal shutdown limits.

Validate with equipment running

Observe the installation under a representative sustained load and during warmer conditions within the equipment’s operating range. Record intake temperature, reported device temperatures, fan behavior and any reduction in performance. Keep sensor locations consistent between measurements. A cool room reading near a doorway can coexist with an overheated upper rack. A trial that only covers the first minutes after startup cannot establish steady cooling capacity.

Keep the plan maintainable

Schedule filter inspections based on actual dust accumulation and pressure or temperature trends. Maintain clear paths for replacement parts and cleaning. Review airflow after adding a rack or moving a partition because small layout changes can alter recirculation. Keep a response plan for failed extraction equipment. Successful cooling means every device stays within its documented limits while the site remains serviceable, rather than merely having a large fan at one end.
