Measuring mining electricity costs correctly
Reconcile watts, kilowatt-hours and the electricity bill without counting the same expense twice.

Choose a measurement boundary
Decide whether you are measuring one miner, a rack or the complete site. A miner reading does not automatically include external ventilation and cooling. Write the boundary next to every number so cost comparisons remain meaningful. Use appropriately rated metering installed or selected by a qualified person. A small domestic plug meter is not automatically suitable for a high-power continuous load or industrial electrical connection.
Distinguish power from energy
Power in kW describes the rate of energy use; energy in kWh accumulates over time. A constant 3 kW load running for 24 hours uses 72 kWh. If measured power varies, use meter readings over the interval instead of multiplying a momentary screenshot by a full day. Account for actual standby consumption when hashing stops, because an idle miner or running pump may still consume electricity.
Apply the correct billing components
Multiply the measured energy in each billing interval by its applicable energy price, then account for other contract charges separately. The bill may include fixed charges, demand-related components or taxes that do not scale directly with miner energy. Use the actual tariff agreement rather than an advertised headline rate. If a hosting payment already includes electricity, adding the same electricity estimate again overstates your total operating cost.
Allocate shared costs transparently
For a farm with shared ventilation, choose and document an allocation method such as measured rack energy or another defensible operational basis. An allocation is a management estimate, not an additional physical measurement. Keep the complete site total as a reconciliation check. Otherwise several device-level spreadsheets can collectively report less cost than the electricity bill, making every miner appear more profitable than the site really is.
Compare periods on equal terms
Record the meter start and end readings, timestamps, operating profiles and known outages. Compare similar ambient conditions where possible because cooling demand changes. Investigate large differences between software estimates and the meter before using them for purchasing decisions. A useful monthly report connects device production, site energy and the actual invoice, and explains any remaining discrepancy rather than silently replacing a measured number with a preferred estimate.
